DENTISTRY MONTH
Friday February 15, 2019 - Why do our pets need a dental prophylaxis?
First, a dental prophylaxis helps prevent underlying illnesses related to poor oral hygiene and avert pain.
Without daily oral care, like tooth brushing and administering a special dental diet, there will be tartar and plaque formation. Consequently to this build-up, gingivitis will appear.
In the long run, periodontal disease will appear. This illness is caused by bacteria that can be found in plaque and tartar. It causes damage to the gums and more precisely the periodontal ligament that attaches the teeth to the jaw bone. Therefore, there is dental abscess formation and tooth decay.
Dogs and cats affected will have no other choice but to develop tolerance to chronic dental pain, hence the very subtle symptoms difficult to detect by their owners.
Your veterinarian will assess the dental condition of your pet on its annual exam. It is possible that he will recommend a preventive dental prophylaxis to prevent the evolution of this dental illness. He will also give you tips to prevent plaque and tartar build-up, like daily teeth brushing, special dental food and certain supplements.
