Taking a stand! Duvernay Veterinary Hospital inc. has stopped declawing cats!
On March 16th, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) has announced its position against the surgical removal of feline claws (declaw, or onychectomy). Being a member of this association and sharing its views on this unnecessary surgery, we have decided that the declaw procedure will no longer be offered by Duvernay Veterinary Hospital.
For years now, opposition to the declawing of cats has grown in popularity throughout many countries and has promoted a lot of internal questioning in ours as well. Declawing of cats is not simply the removal of the nail: it is in effect an amputation of the last bone of each finger/toe! Indeed, throughout the years, we have seen certain patients present with long term pain or other problems. After consulting many other colleagues who had also observed similar effects, it became quite clear that this decision was the best for our feline patients.
We would also like to invite you to consult the position statement of our association by clicking on the following link:
Finally, proud of our decision, we would also like you to share an excerpt of our veterinarian oath that has helped to motivate our position: " I will strive to promote animal health and welfare, relieve animal suffering"...
Do not hesitate to call us in order to learn about all the alternatives that exist to that surgery!
